I've heard that the balanced boulder recently fell off.

A sort of miniature Ayers Rock, this big rock is just a pimple on the larger formation it sits on, jutting out of the middle of flatland Texas.

There is a park in Contra Costa county squeezed in between the suburbs and mega mansions from Berkeley to Martinez, California. From December through May, the hills are a brilliant green filled with salamanders, red fox, deer and hawks. I spent a few hours crawling around in the mud with my camera in Briones Regional Park.

My grandmother took me to the Great Sand Dunes National Monument when I was 12 years old. It has remained one of my favorite places.

I really can't remember where this is... Colorado, Utah, Nevada. Somewhere western and desolate.

Downtown in November. I worked a block away from this spot. The building in front is where Francis Ford Coppola keeps an office. His restaurant is on the bottom floor. We'd see him out there from time to time sipping at his wine....

An ancient redwood finally falls over. They take another lifetime to decay.

My niece at her birthday party in Austin.

I don't remember this child's name (the daughter of a friend of a friend), but she stayed here one night. Slept in her ballerina costume and always looked like she had heavy thoughts on her mind.

One of the most spectacular rest areas I've ever rested at...

Walnut Creek used to be populated with farmers. Now it seems to be inhabited solely by shoppers, but when I lived there, there were signs of eccentricity. I hope they're still there.

On a late summer road trip to Telluride from Walnut Creek, I once spent the night on the eastern edge of Yosemite. When I woke in the morning, autumn had announced it's arrival.
